Hakeem Jeffries rejects GOP spending bill as ‘unserious and unacceptable’

Hakeem Jeffries rejects GOP spending bill as ‘unserious and unacceptable’

Calling it “unserious and unacceptable,” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries rejected on Monday a proposal from Speaker Mike Johnson that links continued government funding for six months with a measure to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

The response frames the spending battle to come over the next weeks as lawmakers work to reach consensus on a short-term spending bill that would prevent a partial government shutdown when the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1. Lawmakers hope to avoid a shutdown just weeks before voters go to the polls.

Johnson is punting the final decisions on full-year spending into next year when a new president and Congress take over. He’s doing so at the urging of members within his conference who believe that Republicans will be in a better position next year to secure the funding and policy priorities they want.

()

But Jeffries said the appropriations process should be wrapped up before the end of the current calendar year, and the short-term measure should reflect that. It also needs to be free of “partisan policy changes,” Jeffries said.

“There is no other viable path forward that protects the health, safety and economic well-being of hardworking American taxpayers,” Jeffries wrote in a letter to House Democrats released Monday.

Lawmakers are returning to Washington this week following a traditional August recess spent mostly in their home states and districts. They are not close to completing work on the dozen annual appropriations bills that will fund the agencies during the next fiscal year, so they’ll need to approve a stopgap measure.

The House bill including the proof of citizenship mandate for voter registration complicates the effort. The voter registration measure is popular with House Republicans. The House Freedom Caucus, which generally includes the chamber’s most conservative members, called for it to be attached to the spending bill.

Republicans say that requiring proof of citizenship would ensure that U.S. elections are only for American citizens, improving confidence in the nation’s federal election system, something that former President Donald Trump has sought to undermine over the years.

When the House Republican proposal was unveiled on Friday, Johnson called it a critically important step to keep the federal government funded and secure the federal election process.

()

Congress has a responsibility to do both, and we must ensure that only American citizens can decide American elections,” Johnson said.

Opponents say it is already against the law for noncitizens to vote in federal elections and that the document requirements would disenfranchise millions of people who do not have the necessary documents readily available when they get a chance to register.

Trump and other Republicans have revved up their complaints about the issue of noncitizens voting with the influx of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border under President Joe Biden’s administration. They are contending Democrats let them in to add them to the voter rolls. But the available evidence shows that noncitizen voting in federal elections is incredibly rare.

Senate Democrats have also come out against Johnson’s proposal. And Biden administration officials have also weighed in against the bill. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that long-term continuing resolutions, such as the current one to be voted on in the House this week, harm military readiness.

Austin said in a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees that, if passed, the bill would mark the second year in a row and the seventh time in the past 15 years that the department is delayed in moving forward with some critical priorities.

“These actions subject Service members and their families to unnecessary stress, empower our adversaries, misalign billions of dollars, damage our readiness, and impede our ability to react to emergent events,” Austin wrote.

Don't forget these plays: Tolbert's alert recovery, CeeDee's run & Garrett's penalty

Don't forget these plays: Tolbert's alert recovery, CeeDee's run & Garrett's penalty

There are plenty of things to overlook on a day like this, one that began with a mega-contract extension for Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys then proceeded to hammer the Browns on both sides of the ball – and special teams too.

But all games have plays that get lost in the shuffle that could've changed the outcome. Here are some that might not be remembered, but were significant to the final score.

False start on the Browns On Cleveland's first drive of the game, the Browns were on the move and looked to keep it going with a fourth-and-2 attempt at the Cowboys' 28-yard line. But a false start on Jack Conklin, who was trying to get a jump on blocking Micah Parsons, pushed them back 5 yards. After a timeout, Dustin Hopkins kicked a 51-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. But the penalty prevented the Browns from perhaps getting a touchdown.

()

Jet sweep by Lamb – For a guy that set franchise records in catches last year and is the highest-paid receiver in Cowboys history, leave it to CeeDee Lamb to set the tone of the game … with a run, of course. But with the Cowboys getting off to a slow start offensively, moving backward on their first drive and already committing a penalty on the second, it was a 10-yard run by Lamb that gave the Cowboys a first down. That seemed to calm things down, and the offense proceeded to move down the field. Lamb caught a deep ball, and then Prescott connected with Brandin Cooks for a touchdown.

Tolbert jumps on a loose ball – On the second snap of the second quarter, Prescott was hit by Browns defensive end Myles Garrett on a play that looked like a pass. The ball harmlessly rolled to the right side, but Jalen Tolbert alertly fell on the ball in case it was ruled a fumble. As it turned out, the play was ruled a sack and fumble, and had Tolbert not recovered it, the Browns could've picked it up and possibly scored. The Cowboys eventually punted, but the Browns didn't even get a first down in the second quarter.

()

Browns' offside penalty on the 7 – The Cowboys were nearing the end of a long drive in the second quarter and faced first-and-goal at the Cleveland 7-yard line. Prescott was sacked on first down, but Garrett was flagged for lining up offside. That negated the play and gave the Cowboys the ball at the 3. With the new first down, Ezekiel Elliott got the handoff and scored. Obviously, it's a different set of downs with the ball at the 7 than at the 3. That penalty led to a touchdown, giving the Cowboys a 14-3 lead.

Aubrey's rolling kickoff – In the second quarter, the Cowboys had just scored on a touchdown run by Elliott for a 14-3 lead. And Brandon Aubrey's ensuing kickoff proved to be the perfect scenario. He was able to split the two return men with a line-drive that bounced around the 5-yard line and rolled into the end zone. By the new rules, when the ball lands in the 20-yard landing zone and then rolls in for a touchback, the ball is placed at the 20. The Browns weren't able to get a first down, and the Cowboys then used great field position, starting at their own 44-yard line, to add another field goal.

Overshown slams the door – Late in the third quarter, the Browns were down by 17 but trying to sneak back into the game. On fourth-and-7 near midfield, Deshaun Watson tried to get to the outside for a possible scramble, but linebacker DeMarvion Overshown made up ground quick and erased the angle Watson had, decking the Cleveland quarterback for a sack and turnover on downs. The Cowboys were then able to get a 50-yard field goal by Aubrey for a 30-10 lead.

iPhone 16: Release date, prices and new rumoured features

iPhone 16: Release date, prices and new rumoured features

Apple is expected to reveal four new phone models at a launch event in California

Apple is on Monday poised to unveil its iPhone 16 at an annual launch event in California, as the US tech giant seeks to entice consumers with a raft of new artificial intelligence (AI) features.

At the company’s so-called Glowtime event, Apple is planning to unveil four new iPhone models, as well as new AirPods and a revamped Apple Watch.

Its latest gadgets will be geared to take advantage of the tech giant’s AI software, known as Apple Intelligence.

This is powered by new A18 microchip processors, which analysts hope will trigger a surge in sales.

“This iPhone 16 release is all about Apple Intelligence and the unleashing of the consumer AI revolution,” says Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

( )

The tech giant will show off its new gadgets at an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, starting at 6pm UK time.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of the event.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro: rumoured features

While Apple is always tight-lipped ahead of its launch events, the tech giant is expected to debut four new iPhone 16 models.

This includes the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The iPhone 16 is expected to have a screen size of 6.1 inches, while the Plus will have a 6.7-inch display. The Pro versions will be slightly larger at 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively.

The gadgets will look broadly similar to other iPhones of recent years. The iPhone 16 models will come with a dual rear camera and the Pro variant with a triple rear set-up.

( )

However, all the phones will come with a new “capture” or “camera” button that will act similar to a shutter button on a regular camera – with added touch and swipe functions.

The phones will also include a programmable action button, which can be linked to quick-launch different features.

What is Apple Intelligence and when will it be released?

Alongside its new iPhones, Apple will also be upgrading its smartphone software later this month with iOS 18.

The new software will come with Apple Intelligence, a suite of tools and apps reliant on AI. This will include a revamped Siri digital assistant and a host of writing tools.

This will include AI-powered features that can reply to emails, draft blog posts and presentations, create synthetic artwork and design customised emojis.

( )

Apple Intelligence will also grant users access to ChatGPT, the digital assistant from Silicon Valley start-up OpenAI.

Apple has previously said: “Siri can tap into ChatGPT’s expertise when helpful. Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and Siri then presents the answer directly.”

How much will the iPhone 16 cost?

The iPhone 16’s pricing is widely anticipated to mirror the cost of its previous iPhone 15 model upon launch.

Analysts from TrendForce believe the iPhone16 will start at $799 (£611), while the iPhone 16 Plus will come in at $899. The pricier iPhone 16 Pro will start at $1,099 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will cost $1,199.

Should its UK price structure remain the same as the iPhone 15, the iPhone 16 will start at £799 in Britain. The iPhone is typically more expensive in the UK owing to taxes and exchange rates.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro release date

Following Monday’s launch event, the new iPhone 16 is expected to be available for pre-order from Friday Sept 13, and will then go on full sale a week later on Sept 20.

However, some of the crucial new software features may not be available immediately.

Apple Intelligence is expected to be released in October, while customers in the EU will not get the new software until 2025 because of regulatory delays.

What about the Apple Watch and AirPods?

Apple is also looking to release a new low-end version of its AirPod headphones, the AirPods 4.

It will also debut a revamped version of its larger, over-ear headphones, which will be known as the AirPods Max.

The new Apple Watch X is also expected to be launched, boasting new health features and a slimline design.

How can I watch Apple’s Glowtime event?

Apple’s Glowtime live event is expected to start at 6pm UK time and will be available to watch on Apple’s website and its YouTube channel.

An American wheelchair basketball legend delivered gold at final Paralympics

An American wheelchair basketball legend delivered gold at final Paralympics
Before the gold medal was placed around his neck, Steve Serio called his teammates together for one last huddle. He had just led them to a 73-69 win over Britain that gave the United States a third straight Paralympic gold in men’s wheelchair basketball, but their victory — and Serio’s career — wasn’t complete until he thanked them. They leaned in on their chairs and listened closely as hundreds of fans waved American flags behind them.

(
)

“I thanked them for their sacrifice, I thanked them for their hard work, and I thanked them for giving me a really cool experience as a retirement gift,” Serio said.

The day Serio found wheelchair basketball, inside a New York gym when he was 15, will always be the most important moment of his life. But there was a surreal feeling how it led to Saturday night. In his final Paralympic game, he delivered 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists — and he did it in front of a raucous crowd of nearly 13,000 fans that reflected just how far the sport at the Paralympics has come.

By the time he received his gold medal at Bercy Arena, it was exactly midnight in Paris on his 36th birthday, and Serio was ready to pass the torch to the next generation.

(

)

You look at this game, and this experience a little bit differently when you know it’s your last one,” Serio said. “I can’t think of a better way to go out.”

The United States became the first team to win three straight gold medals in wheelchair basketball, a game that has evolved into one of the world’s most popular para sports. Originally developed by soldiers injured in World War II, it was one of the original eight sports at the first Paralympics in Rome in 1960, and today, hundreds of thousands of people play the game in more than 100 countries.

The rules of wheelchair basketball are largely identical to standing basketball. The primary difference, though, is dribbling: wheelchair players, all of whom have impairments that affect motor function, must pass or bounce the ball after two pushes of their wheels to avoid being penalized for traveling.

The sport has found a foothold in the U.S. thanks in part to a strong collegiate scene, including at Illinois, where Serio competed, and Wisconsin-Whitewater, where half of Team USA’s roster played. Many players find careers competing professionally in Europe, and over the years, the competition has intensified globally. Several stakeholders see an opportunity for the sport to grow in the United States when it is played at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Dolphins' Tyreek Hill detained for driving violation, will play

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police Sunday outside Hard Rock Stadium for a driving violation but has been released from custody, the team announced.

()

The traffic incident happened about one block away from the stadium, the team said. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support, according to the team.

Hill is available to play in the Dolphins' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team said.

Sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington that Hill was stopped for speeding and then got into a verbal altercation with police and was subsequently placed in handcuffs.

Hill was cited for reckless driving, sources told Darlington

In an interview with ESPN, Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called it "a heartbreaking situation" that was "completely unnecessary." He said he wants to make sure his client wasn't mistreated and that seeing his client handcuffed was "mindboggling."

"We will investigate," Rosenhaus said. "We will look out for Tyreek."

He added that he was "just thankful Tyreek is OK" and thanked the team for helping to deescalate the situation.

Earlier Sunday, video emerged of Hill being placed in handcuffs while surrounded by multiple police officers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter contributed to this report.
