As jury selection starts in Hunter Biden’s gun case, president says he has ‘boundless love’ for him

As jury selection starts in Hunter Biden’s gun case, president says he has ‘boundless love’ for him

federal gun case against President Joe Biden’s son Hunter opened Monday with jury selection, following the collapse of a plea deal that would have avoided the spectacle of a trial so close the 2024 election. First lady Jill Biden was seated in the front row of the courtroom, in a show of support for her son.( )

In a statement, the president said that as a dad he has “boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength.”

“I am the President, but I am also a Dad,” he said, adding that would have no further comment on the case. “Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.”( )

Hunter Biden, who spent the weekend with his parents, has been charged in Delaware with three felonies stemming from a 2018 firearm purchase when he was, according to his memoir, in the throes of a crack.( )

addiction. He has been accused of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application used to screen firearms applicants when he said he was not a drug user, and illegally having the gun for 11 days.

Police are searching for a suspect after a shooting at an Ohio birthday party left 1 person dead and 24 others injured

Police are searching for a suspect after a shooting at an Ohio birthday party left 1 person dead and 24 others injured

Police searching for a suspect in a mass shooting at a birthday party in Akron, Ohio, that left a 27-year-old-man dead and 24 others injured said they’re worried about the possibility of retaliatory violence.( )

Officers responded to 911 calls shortly after midnight Sunday, reporting shots fired and multiple victims struck in a residential area, according to a statement from the city’s mayor and police chief.

The shooting took place during a “large birthday party” that earlier in the night had more than 200 people in attendance, Akron Police Chief Brian Harding said in a Sunday evening news conference.( )

“All incidents of gun violence are tragedies, but here the sheer number of victims is shocking and deeply concerning,” Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said at the news conference.

The shooting marks the latest instance of a celebration in the US ending in gunfire. This year alone, bullets have put a grim end to sports rallies, family gatherings, religious celebrations, parties and a high school senior skip day.( )

And it’s one of more than 192 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. One of those incidents, with four or more people injured not including the shooter, took place just hours after the gunfire in Ohio, when a Pennsylvania bar fight ended with two people dead and seven injured, police in Allegheny County said.( )

In the Akron shooting’s aftermath, authorities found the scene “littered” with spent shell casings that stretched down a whole block, the police chief said.

“Based on the layout of the spent shell (casings) it appears consistent with someone driving by shooting out of car,” Harding said. “We believe that some individuals at the party may have returned fire based on physical evidence at the scene.”( )

At least two handguns were recovered from the scene, but authorities found different shell casings from multiple kinds of firearms, Harding said.

US expects Israel will accept Gaza ceasefire plan if Hamas does

US expects Israel will accept Gaza ceasefire plan if Hamas does

The US has "every expectation" Israel will accept a ceasefire proposal that would begin with a six-week cessation of hostilities in Gaza if Hamas takes the deal, a senior White House official has said.( )

The three-part plan unveiled by President Joe Biden last week would also see a "surge" of humanitarian aid, as well as an exchange of some hostages for Palestinian prisoners before a permanent end to the war.

The proposal, however, has encountered vocal opposition from some members of Israel's government.( )

The negotiations come as fighting continues in Rafah, which came under intense Israeli airstrikes over the weekend.

According to the UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, all 36 of its shelters in the Rafah area are empty after residents were forced to flee.

Another 1.7 million people are estimated to be displaced in Khan Younis and parts of central Gaza.

Speaking to ABC News on Sunday morning, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US had "every expectation" that Israel would "say yes" to the proposed ceasefire deal if Hamas accepts.

"We're waiting for an official response from Hamas," he said, adding that the US hopes that both sides agree to start the first phase of the plan "as soon as possible".( )

During that initial six-week pause in the fighting, Mr Kirby said the "two sides would sit down and try to negotiate what phase two could look like, and when that could begin".

Late on Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made separate calls to Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and war cabinet member Benny Gantz to lobby for the deal.

Mr Blinken "commended Israel for the proposal", stressing that Hamas should take the deal "without delay", said state department spokesman Matthew Miller.( )

He also added that America's top diplomat said "the proposal would advance Israel’s long-term security interests".

On Saturday, however, two far-right Israeli ministers threatened to quit and collapse the country's governing coalition if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the deal.

Modi's alliance to win big in India election, exit polls project

NEW DELHI, June 1 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance is projected to win a big majority in the general election that concluded on Saturday, TV exit polls said, suggesting it would do better than expected by most analysts.

( )

Most exit polls projected the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could win a two-thirds majority in the 543-member lower house of parliament, where 272 is needed for a simple majority. A two-thirds majority will allow the government to usher in far-reaching amendments in the constitution.

Can South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa survive the ANC’s election setback

Can South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa survive the ANC’s election setback

The governing party must form a coalition government but some opposition parties want the president out of the picture first.
( )
With nearly all votes counted, the ANC has won about 40 percent of the mandate, followed by the principal opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, with 21 percent. In third place is the big success story of the election: Former President Jacob Zuma’s uMKhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, which has ravaged the ANC’s core voting base, looks poised to form the government in KwaZulu Natal province, and could prove critical in determining whether the ANC forms the next government under Ramaphosa. The MK party has won almost 15 percent of the national vote, and 45 percent of the vote in KwaZulu Natal, Zuma’s home province.( )

Already, the MK, whose senior leadership — including Zuma himself — consists of many politicians with ANC roots, has ruled out a deal with the governing party unless it sacks Ramaphosa first. After leading the ANC to its worst-ever electoral performance, Ramaphosa will face intense pressure to stand aside, said analysts.( )

“They’ve lost the majority and they’ve lost it badly,” said Richard Calland, Africa director at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. “That represents a very significant defeat.”

The ANC is still South Africa’s largest political formation, and it is almost impossible for the next government to be formed without the party, so it will be in a position to drive coalition negotiations, said Callard. “The question is whether Ramaphosa will lead those negotiations or whether he will resign or be ousted in the very short term.”( )

Those questions are magnified by the limited options that Ramaphosa and the ANC face, as they try to pull together a coalition that can rule.

Zuma vs Ramaphosa: A bitter history

If the ANC and the MK were to team up, they would have a clear majority in parliament. ANC support would also help the MK get across the halfway mark in KwaZulu Natal, giving Zuma’s party a chance to form a government on its very first try: The party was only formed late last year.( )

Yet, that’s easier said than done, according to analysts.READ MORE.....
