According to a police statement provided to CNN, Payne's death took place on Wednesday at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
Buenos Aires police reported that officers from the 14B Police Station responded to the hotel on Wednesday afternoon following a 911 call about a man who was behaving aggressively and was possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The police's statement did not specifically identify this individual as Payne.

Payne was recently seen in Argentina attending his former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert on October 2, as shown in videos shared on social media.
He had recently celebrated his 31st birthday in the UK, according to videos posted on his Snapchat account. Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Payne was the youngest of three siblings and studied music technology at the City of Wolverhampton College.
