Women following THIS diet plan can live much longer

Women following THIS diet plan can live much longer

new study has shed light on the role of diet and its effect on women who are prone to chronic metabolic diseases like diabetes, heart diseases and cancer. The study observed more than 25,000 US women for up to 25 years and found that following a particular type of diet reduced cholesterol, obesity and insulin resistance, all of which are known risk factors for developing metabolic disorders, including diabetes and heart disease.
( )
Women consuming the largely plant-based Mediterranean diet were found to be at a 23 per cent lower risk of dying prematurely, the study found. The findings were published in The Journal of the American Medical Association
( )
The Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating pattern inspired by the traditional dietary habits of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and olive oil as primary sources of nutrition. Additionally, moderate consumption of fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products is encouraged, while red meat and processed foods are limited. This diet is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats, which can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. With its emphasis on fresh, minimally processed foods, the Mediterranean diet

 promotes overall health and well-being.
The researchers included participants aged at least 45 years at the start of the Women's Health Study. The women responded to questionnaires and provided information on their weight, height and body mass index, along with details about their lifestyle, medical and social history. Their blood pressures were also taken. For understanding possible biological mechanisms that could explain the diet's health benefits, the researchers assessed over 30 biomarkers of metabolism and inflammation, including lipids and insulin resistance. Bowel cancer drug found to be effective in 100% of patients in 'unprecedented' breakthrough

Bowel cancer drug found to be effective in 100% of patients in 'unprecedented' breakthrough

The world is one step closer to finding a cure for cancer after an immunotherapy drug rid patients of bowel cancer 100 percent of the time without the need for surgery and chemotherapy.( )

Jemperli (also called dostarlimab) from GSK showed “unprecedented results”, the firm said, with no evidence of disease in all patients treated.

Everyone on the drug had locally advanced mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) rectal cancer - a serious form of bowel cancer, according to data presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference in Chicago.

Jemperli is already approved on the NHS for women with some types of advanced or recurrent womb cancer.( )

The data showed all 42 patients in a trial led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in the US had a complete response to treatment, with no evidence of tumours on scans.

The first 24 patients have been followed up so far for 26.3 months on average.

Studies suggest (dMMR) rectal cancer accounts for 5-10% of all rectal cancers.( )

Hesham Abdullah, a senior vice president at GSK, said: “The data showing no evidence of disease in 42 patients is remarkable.

Bird Flu: Third Human Case in US Emerges After Dairy Cattle Outbreak

Bird Flu: Third Human Case in US Emerges After Dairy Cattle Outbreak

US officials on Thursday reported the country's third human case of bird flu linked to the current outbreak of the virus in dairy cattle.

The Michigan farm worker is the second person sickened by the disease in the Midwestern state, following a first case in Texas in April.

( )

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a statement all three cases were spread from cows to humans, as opposed to human-to-human, which would be more concerning.

But it added it was the first case "to report more typical symptoms of acute respiratory illness associated with influenza virus infection," while the previous cases resulted in mild symptoms including conjunctivitis.

( )

The person's symptoms included cough without fever, eye discomfort and watery eye discharge. They were treated with the antiviral medicine oseltamivir and isolated at home, with their symptoms resolving.

The worker was not wearing personal protective equipment, which health authorities have recommended for those in close contact with dairy herds, said Michigan's health department.

( )

Over the past few years, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus called HPAI H5N1 has spread to infect more than 50 animal species, including, from March, dairy cattle in the United States.

Unlike in Europe, American farmers are allowed to feed cattle ground up chicken waste, which some scientists say may be a risk factor for bird flu – though the feed industry has challenged this claim and US authorities believe wild birds are responsible for infecting cows.

( )

"The risk to members of the general public who do not have exposure to infected animals remains low," said the CDC.
